Haapajärvi biothermal plant

NYAB carried out the construction of a new biothermal plant in Haapajärvi for Haapajärven Lämpö Oy. The nearly 30-year-old existing plant had reached the end of its operational life and was set to remain in reserve and peak usage. Compared to the old plant, the new facility significantly reduced particulate emissions, well below the new EU directive’s emission limit values.

NYAB executed two separate contracts at the site. Initially, the foundation work and concrete structures for the truck scale were completed. By May 2020, the construction contract for the boiler building, including office and social facilities, as well as the fuel storage and screening plant, was underway. The 20-megawatt fluidized bed boiler was supplied by KPA Unicon, while Laitex Oy provided the fuel conveyors and equipment.

For Haapajärven Lämpö, this is a €13 million investment, enabling the company to continue offering its customers affordable district heating produced with renewable fuel in the future. The value of NYAB’s portion of the contract was €4 million.

The biothermal plant uses bark and wood as fuel, sourced from Haapajärvi’s two HASA sawmills.

Haapajärven Lämpö Oy aimed to strengthen its collaboration with HASA, targeting up to 90 percent of the fuel to come from HASA’s sawmills. The remainder would be sourced from local suppliers, such as forestry associations and small woodchip contractors. Office facilities for HASA were also built in the new plant.

The contract was completed and handed over to the client in December 2020.
