On June 22, 2022, NYAB signed an agreement with the globally operating steel company SSAB for a project at the Raahe factory site. NYAB was responsible for the construction of a new research and laboratory center, along with an associated office building, with a total area of approximately 8,000 square meters. The total value of the project is 12.5 million euros.
The new building at the Raahe factory replaced the old laboratory facilities and a previously demolished office building. The investment aims to develop the operations of the laboratories and prepare for SSAB’s transition to fossil-free steel production.
The new building has a floor area of approximately 8,000 square meters, of which the office space accounts for about 3,000 square meters and the research center for about 5,000 square meters. Approximately 100 people work in the building.
The building has a steel frame and is ground-supported. SSAB’s steel structures and products were used in the construction. The exterior walls are SPA elements, and the roof is a shed-style wooden frame with a felt covering. The building’s special features include impressive facade elements and cladding, using SSAB’s stainless COR-TEN® steel and painted GreenCoat steel. Additionally, NYAB carried out a separate foundation contract for a pneumatic tube bridge, valued at approximately half a million euros.
The contract was executed on a tight schedule and was completed on time at the turn of the year 2023-2024. In the project, NYAB acted as the contractor for the building’s technical works and the main contractor, while the HVAC and electrical contractors acted as subcontractors.
