Silverhöjden Line completed – rail traffic resumes between Grängesberg and Ställdalen

NYAB has completed the upgrade of the Silverhöjden Line between Grängesberg and Ställdalen. Through one of the most significant improvements to the route in many years, the railway, which is more than 150 years old, has been given a new lease of life and can now operate together with the parallel Hörken Line as a functional double-track system for both freight and passenger traffic.

As part of the contract, NYAB carried out comprehensive track renewal along the 17.5-kilometre route, installed new sub-ballast and overhead line equipment, and improved drainage throughout the line. Around ten turnouts were replaced, while the historic bridge over the Ställdalsån River was cearfully restored as part of the project.

The Silverhöjden Line has been upgraded to the same technical standard as the parallel Hörken Line. This creates better conditions for increased capacity, improved punctuality and a more resilient railway system in the Bergslagen region.

“The greatest challenge was coordinating a large number of activities within the same possession period. When so many critical works need to be delivered at the same time, planning and coordination become essential to keeping the programme on track,” says Anel Bajramovic, Railway Works Manager at NYAB.

The works were carried out during a short and intensive line closure, during which several major activities had to be completed within the same time window. Despite changes to the scope of the contract during delivery, rail traffic resumed only one week later than originally planned.

“This was made possible through strong collaboration, a high level of commitment and a shared determination to find solutions when circumstances changed. I would like to thank all colleagues, subcontractors, the client and our other project partners who contributed to making this possible,” says Anel Bajramovic.

The project strengthens capacity on an important section of the Bergslagen Line and creates better conditions for both passenger and freight transport across the region.
