23.07.26Tommi Kaija’s journey at NYAB began through a business acquisition, which brought not only a new organisation but also a broad and diverse portfolio of projects in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
The transition provided an opportunity to continue working on familiar projects while also developing new ways of working in a different environment. His new role quickly evolved into a comprehensive position involving both project and team leadership.
Overall responsibility for projects and collaboration
Currently, Tommi serves as Site Manager for the Myllypuro SPKA project and also provides support for several sites that transferred as part of the business acquisition. His role is broad, combining day-to-day project management with more strategic oversight of larger project portfolios.
“In Myllypuro, I am responsible for the duties of a Site Manager, and I support other projects whenever needed. In addition, I work on tender calculations and lead the Infra Helsinki Metropolitan Area team together with Site Manager Petri Sjöholm,” Tommi says.
The role requires strong organisational skills, close collaboration, and the ability to move seamlessly between different projects and responsibilities.
Meaningful work in a developing urban environment
Infrastructure projects have a direct impact on people’s everyday lives, which makes the work particularly meaningful to Tommi.
“We carry out projects that have a genuine and positive impact on both people and the environment. Seeing tangible results motivates me,” he says.
Tommi describes himself as someone who enjoys getting things done and values seeing work progress from start to finish.
“I enjoy moving things forward, solving challenges, and ultimately completing projects. That’s what makes the work rewarding day after day,” he explains.
Variety and diverse projects keep the work interesting
For Tommi, the appeal of the job lies above all in its diversity and variety. Different projects, working environments, and situations keep daily work dynamic and engaging.
“I have the opportunity to work on highly diverse projects, which is definitely one of the best aspects of the job. Every project comes with its own unique characteristics and challenges,” Tommi says.
This variety also supports continuous professional development.
“Different sites and projects force you to look at things from new perspectives, and at the same time, you’re constantly learning more.”
Teamwork and clear ways of working at nyab
At NYAB, Tommi particularly values clear processes and smooth collaboration.
“Clarity and consistency are important to me. They make everyday work easier and support successful project delivery,” he says.
Teamwork becomes especially important in large projects.
“When there is a lot of responsibility and work is spread across multiple sites, effective collaboration and shared ways of working are essential.”
From the Forssa region to national parks and local sports
Tommi comes from Forssa in the Kanta-Häme region, an area known for its industrial heritage and rich natural surroundings.
“I would take visitors to explore the Kehräämö and Kutomo areas, where the strong legacy of Wahren and Finlayson can still be seen. They tell an important story about the region’s history and development.”
Among natural attractions, two destinations stand out in particular.
“The Saari and Torronsuo National Park areas are wonderful places where you can experience the tranquillity of nature throughout the year. In the evening, we’d head to an FPS ice hockey game or a FOSU floorball match, and round off the day with some post-game refreshments at Piipputerassi,” Tommi adds.
Finding balance through family, exercise and building projects
In his free time, Tommi focuses on recovery and maintaining balance in everyday life. Exercise helps him disconnect from work and clear his mind.
“The greatest support for my wellbeing comes from the time I spend with my wife and sons. That’s truly important to me,” he says. “When I’m exercising, I can reset my mind. Everything depends on yourself, and that’s good for you.”
He also enjoys building things outside work.
“I like taking on small construction projects and acting a bit like a Lego engineer. It combines creativity with the enjoyment of making things,” Tommi says.
