The Tampere Regional Central Wastewater Treatment Plant is a modern wastewater treatment facility serving the Tampere region and its growing needs. The project was carried out as a joint initiative between the municipalities of Tampere, Kangasala, Lempäälä, Pirkkala, Vesilahti and Ylöjärvi through Tampereen Seudun Keskuspuhdistamo Oy. With a total budget of approximately EUR 350 million, it represents the largest environmental investment ever undertaken in the Pirkanmaa region.

NYAB’s contract included the construction of the project’s two wastewater pumping stations: a facility of approximately 600 square metres in Rahola and a larger 1,000-square-metre pumping station in Viinikanlahti, close to the centre of Tampere. The Viinikanlahti facility ranks among the largest wastewater pumping stations in Finland.

Construction works commenced in June 2022, and the pumping stations were brought into operation as part of the overall wastewater treatment system by the end of 2024. The facilities form a vital part of the central treatment plant, enabling wastewater from across the region to be conveyed to a single, modern treatment facility.

By centralising wastewater treatment and utilising the latest treatment technologies, the project improves treatment efficiency, enhances environmental protection and reduces the environmental impact on surrounding waterways. The facilities support reliable wastewater management for both current and future needs across the Tampere region.

The Viinikanlahti pumping station presented particularly demanding construction conditions due to its location adjacent to Lake Pyhäjärvi. The lowest structures extend well below the lake’s water level, requiring the construction of a deep, circular excavation supported by drilled piles and the execution of extensive concrete works under continuous groundwater pressure.

Both the Rahola and Viinikanlahti pumping stations were constructed next to operational wastewater treatment facilities. Construction activities were carefully coordinated to ensure uninterrupted operations throughout the project.

The contracts included the pumping stations and associated basins, as well as maintenance, control room and staff facilities. Acting as the main contractor, NYAB was responsible for the construction works, which combined cast-in-place concrete structures with precast element construction.
