Electricity production at the Utajärvi solar park has started
23.05.25The Utajärvi solar park project, contracted by NYAB for Skarta Energy and launched at the beginning of 2024, has reached a significant milestone. The first 51.9 megawatt-peak (MWp) of solar power capacity has been connected to Fingrid’s main grid, and electricity production has begun. The energy production from this first phase corresponds to about one-third of Finland’s current industrial-scale solar power capacity.
The Utajärvi solar park is being built on a 140-hectare area, where approximately 170,000 solar panels will be installed. Once completed, the park is expected to produce around 97 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar electricity annually, making it one of the largest solar power projects in Finland.
“The commissioning of the first phase is a significant milestone in the Isosuo project. The Isosuo solar park is being built on a disused peat bog, which presents a challenging construction environment. Despite the challenging conditions, the work has progressed excellently and even ahead of schedule. From the beginning, the project has been based on open and constructive cooperation among various stakeholders. A warm thank you to everyone involved throughout the project,” says Seppo Nuorala, NYAB’s project manager for solar power construction.
The Isosuo project is not limited to solar power alone. Skarta Energy has also invested in a 20-megawatt/40-megawatt-hour battery storage system, which enables energy storage and helps balance electricity production. NYAB is responsible for constructing the battery storage. Once completed, the Isosuo area will become a hybrid park combining solar power and energy storage.
