Meet Tuomo Hannula, a Project Manager in power networks

Tuomo Hannula’s journey to NYAB began in an unexpected life situation, and quickly led to a role that suited his expertise in power networks.

“My employment at my previous company had just ended when my current manager called and asked whether I would be interested in transmission line work. I said I was very interested,” Tuomo explains.

That phone call set a new direction for his career. The opportunity to tailor the role was a key factor.

“I was told the role could be shaped into something where I would feel at my best. That proved to be true, and it had a major influence on my decision.”

Overall responsibility for projects and collaboration

Currently, Tuomo works as a Project Manager on the Rajavuori–Brändskogen 110 kV transmission line project. He is also involved in the underground cabling project for the Mikkeli data centre, and occasionally supports tender calculations.

The role of a Project Manager is both varied and demanding.

“My responsibilities cover the entire project lifecycle, from the contract phase through to final documentation. Day-to-day work includes liaising with the client, financial monitoring and reporting, material procurement, and quality assurance, such as FAT testing,” Tuomo says.

In addition, he is responsible for subcontractor tendering and selection, and supports the Site Manager with day-to-day site matters.

For Tuomo, building power networks is more than just a job.

“I find this work highly meaningful. We are building infrastructure that is essential for an increasingly electrified society,” he notes.

Variety and nature as key aspects of the role

The most rewarding aspect of the job lies in its diversity.

“This role involves working with a wide range of stakeholders. At the same time, it takes you out into the field, into forests and open landscapes. Nature has always felt natural to me, and I truly enjoy being there.”

The changing conditions and unpredictability add an extra dimension to the work.

“The operating environment means unexpected situations arise from time to time. That is what keeps the work interesting.”

Collaboration and strong expertise at NYAB

At NYAB, Tuomo particularly values teamwork and the breadth of expertise within the organisation.

“There is a very wide range of specialist construction expertise within the company. You can always find support and clear answers when needed,” he says.

He also appreciates the independence the role offers.

“I can plan my days efficiently and manage my own work. That brings flexibility to everyday life,” Tuomo adds.

Strength drawn from the landscapes of Liminka

Tuomo is originally from Liminka in Finland, and the nature of Northern Ostrobothnia remains close to his heart.

“If I could take a visitor to one place, we would head by boat to Liminganlahti on a darkening evening in late September to watch the autumn migration of geese, cranes and swans. It is an impressive experience to see vast flocks returning at dusk from the fields of Tyrnävä to spend the night at sea,” he says.

In his free time, Tuomo maintains an active lifestyle.

“I stay active in many ways, but volleyball is my main sport. I also enjoy nature through hiking, hunting and berry picking.”
