NYAB implements expansion projects of Utanen and Isokangas 110kV substations in Northern Ostrobothnia
21.06.23NYAB has agreed with Finland’s transmission system operator Fingrid on the expansion projects of the switchgear at the 110 kV substations in Utanen and Isokangas. This is NYAB’s first winning substation project for the transmission system operator Fingrid.
The agreement with Fingrid is a significant milestone for NYAB. NYAB’s electricity network business was launched in March 2022, and already in September of the same year, NYAB was accepted into Fingrid’s supplier register. Inclusion in the supplier register was a prerequisite for participating in the tendering process. The project includes the expansion of the Utanen 110 kV substation with two fields, the Isokangas 110 kV substation with one field and 110 kV cabling up to the first transmission line pole.
The Utanen and Isokangas substations are located approximately 40–60 km from Oulu. The Utanen substation is Fingrid’s first substation to be connected to a solar power park. The expansion of Utanen will enable the connection of the solar power plant planned for Tunturisuo in Utajärvi to the main grid. The design work of the Utanen substation will begin immediately, and the new fields will be ready for commissioning in October 2024. The planning of the Isokangas project will also begin immediately, and commissioning is planned for April 2025.
“It is always welcome to have fair competition and new agile operators in the industry. Actors are needed to implement grid investments that support the energy transition – now and in the future,” says Timo Kiiveri, Director of Asset Management at Fingrid.
“This agreement is NYAB’s first substation project won for the transmission system operator Fingrid and thus a significant opening for our entire team. We are particularly pleased with this agreement and are excited to start cooperating with Fingrid,” says Antti Keskinen, Head of Power Network Construction at NYAB Finland.
