NYAB signs collaboration agreement for major tramway project in Uppsala

05.08.25

On 20 December 2024, NYAB announced that the company, together with its partner Azvi, had been selected as the general contractor for the construction of the Uppsala Tramway. The parties have now entered into an agreement with the client, Uppsala Municipality, and received an order for Phase 1 of the project. The assignment will be carried out through an integrated joint venture between NYAB and Azvi, with each party holding a 50 percent share. The project is conducted as a collaboration project with Uppsala Municipality.

Phase 1 includes design work, procurement of subcontractors, establishment of a production schedule, and calculation of project costs, and the work will begin immediately. The total value of Phase 1 is estimated at SEK 150–200 million (EUR 13–18 million) for the joint venture company.

Through this agreement, NYAB is also well positioned to receive the order for Phase 2 of the project – the construction phase – which is planned to start in 2026 with the aim of being completed in 2029. Phase 2 is estimated to have a total value of approximately SEK 5 billion (EUR 447 million) for the joint venture company, with the order to be placed separately and as the next step by Uppsala Municipality.

“This collaboration is an important milestone for NYAB and a solid foundation for our continued growth. The project places high demands as it will be carried out in an urban and high-traffic environment, which makes it especially valuable that we already established strong alignment with Uppsala Municipality during the tender phase. We are proud to have been selected and, together with our partner Azvi, we look forward to delivering a high-quality result that contributes to Uppsala’s sustainable urban development,” says Johan Skoog, Business Area Manager Mälardalen at NYAB.

The development of the tramway in Uppsala represents a major urban transformation aimed at improving public transportation and contributing to sustainable urban development. The tramway extension will comprise 17 km of double track and include 22 stops. The project scope includes the design and construction of the track system, platforms, rectifier stations, and other necessary components for a fully operational tramway system. It also includes the construction of streets, pedestrian and bicycle paths, public spaces, bridges, tunnels, and retaining walls.
