Summer at NYAB – learning, responsibility, and community

18.08.25

A summer job at NYAB is more than just a line on a résumé – it’s an opportunity to grow, learn, and find your place in a knowledgeable and warm-hearted work community. This summer, we once again have young talents working with us across Finland. Their stories show how a summer job can be much more than just work – it can be a step toward one’s future career and aspirations.

First summer job in her field

Kiira Kangasniemi is one of the new faces this summer. She graduated in the spring with a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology and began her master’s studies in industrial engineering and management, which had already been her minor. She ended up at Sitema through a mix of chance and courage.

“At the beginning of the year, I was attending university recruitment events and stopped to chat with Jari Tuomaala, Director of Sitema’s electricity network business. Inspired by that conversation, I sent an open application – and here I am,” Kiira says with a smile.

Over the summer, Kiira has been involved in a variety of tasks. In addition to back-office and marketing duties, she has participated in renewable energy projects, which have opened a whole new perspective on the industry.

“Since I didn’t have previous experience in the field, many things were new and surprising, but that’s exactly what made it so rewarding. The best part has been learning new things and experiences of success.”

The work community has made a strong impression. Kiira describes the atmosphere as relaxed and encouraging, where help is always available when needed. The option to work remotely has been especially valuable, allowing her to manage everyday life across multiple locations and spend time with loved ones.

“I would definitely recommend this place to other students. You’re given responsibility, you learn a lot, and you’re surrounded by great colleagues. And there are offices all over Finland, so location is not an obstacle.”

As the summer winds down, Kiira looks forward to new and interesting tasks – “And maybe a few new followers on the company’s LinkedIn page”, she adds with a twinkle in her eye.

Second summer, new challenges

Eppu Veijalainen has returned to NYAB for a second consecutive summer. Eppu, who is studying electrical energy engineering and renewable energy technologies at Tampere University, says it felt good to return to a familiar work environment.

“It’s been nice to see familiar faces and get to know new colleagues. The work got off to a smooth start since last summer’s lessons were still fresh in my mind.”

His second year of studies brought more advanced courses, and Eppu has noticed how work and studies complement each other. Last summer’s experiences have helped him in his studies and the things he has learned in school have been useful in his work.

This summer, Eppu’s responsibilities have expanded. He has focused on documentation, procurement of small supplies, and assisting with projects. New tasks have included preparing final documentation and learning to use design software.

“It’s been great to take on more responsibility. The most interesting part has been drawing final images – it allows you to combine precision and creativity.”

For Eppu, the best part of the summer has been learning new things and challenging himself with new tasks. As summer wraps up, he’s looking forward to a few more interesting workweeks – and a short breather before the autumn semester begins.

At NYAB, a summer job is more than just work – it’s a chance to grow, develop, and find your own path. Kiira’s and Eppu’s stories are wonderful examples of that.
