The wastewater pumping station projects in Tampere have been completed
25.10.24The construction of two wastewater pumping stations serving the Tampere area and neighboring municipalities has been completed. The project, which began in June 2022, included two stations: a 600-square-meter facility in Rahola and a larger, 1,000-square-meter station near Tampere’s center in Viinikanlahti. Upon completion, the Viinikanlahti station has become one of the largest of its kind in Finland.
“The construction contracts for Tampere’s pumping stations were completed as planned, even slightly ahead of schedule. The Rahola station was more traditional construction, where we could begin immediately on the main building work following groundwork and excavation,” says NYAB site manager Tomi Hölttä.
“For the Viinikanlahti pumping station, the first summer was spent on drilling piles, and despite some delivery delays for certain materials, we were able to get work started promptly. The project was both interesting and challenging due to its unique requirements,” he continues.
Constructing the Viinikanlahti wastewater pumping station was demanding, as its proximity to Lake Pyhäjärvi made it a geotechnically complex site. The lowest sections of the large pumping station lie significantly below the lake’s surface, with construction occurring under constant water pressure. Additional challenges arose from the location next to an active wastewater treatment plant, requiring seamless coordination with the operating plant to avoid disruptions.
“I want to extend special thanks to the commissioning organization for the excellent cooperation during the project. The project’s challenges were well managed thanks to the expertise and skills of the teams involved,” Hölttä acknowledges.
