Skarta got an order worth MEUR 10 from LKAB
22.06.21Skarta AB, a subsidiary of the Finnish Skarta Group and a builder of a clean future, has signed an agreement to build a new locomotive depot for LKAB Malmtrafik AB in Northern Sweden.
The value of the contract concluded in June is approximately SEK 100 million, or approximately EUR 10 million, and it includes excavation works, the piling of a new building and the construction of two railway lines to the new locomotive depot in Kiruna. Skarta has already carried out the site’s soil cleaning work at an earlier stage of the project. The work will begin immediately and is expected to be completed in autumn 2022.
“With this investment, we ensure the maintenance of the locomotives and LKAB’s ore deliveries to the ports,” says Hanna Niia, Project Manager at LKAB.
“Skarta is one of the largest construction companies in the county of Norrbotten. We focus on the project management of large-scale construction projects, especially in the mining and energy industries. Skarta has not only decades’ worth of experience in demanding infrastructure and specialised construction, but also long experience in clean water and energy projects. In Finland, Skarta has already installed more than 100 wind turbines. We have operated in Kiruna since 2015 and have achieved a strong foothold in engineering construction in the market of Northern Sweden. Thanks to our local organisation, we know the market, operating methods and conditions thoroughly, which is a prerequisite for success,” says Mikael Sidér, Managing Director of Skarta AB.
The largest industrial investment in the history of Sweden is expected to take place in Norrbotten. LKAB plans to invest SEK 400 billion, or around EUR 40 billion, in the decarbonisation of its iron making process by 2045 and will renew all its production facilities, areas and processing plants. Green electricity is to be produced, for example, with wind power.
“We are implementing large-scale projects that will enable large investments in the Kiruna area. We want to continue supporting the growth and vitality of Northern Sweden,” Sidér continues.
