Utanen and Isokangas 110kV substations

Location: Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland
Client: Fingrid
Project scope: Expansion project
Year of completion:  2024 and 2025

In 2023, NYAB initiated its first substation project for the Finnish transmission system operator, Fingrid. The assignment involves an expansion project of the switchgear at the 110 kV substations in Utanen and Isokangas.

The agreement with Fingrid marks a significant milestone for NYAB. NYAB’s electricity network operations in Finland began in March 2022, and by September of the same year, NYAB was included in Fingrid’s supplier register. Being included in the supplier register is a prerequisite for participating in the tendering process. The project includes the expansion of the Utanen 110 kV transformer station with two fields, the Isokangas 110 kV substation with one field and 110 kV cabling up to the first transmission line pole.

The Utanen and Isokangas substations are located approximately 40–60 km from Oulu. The Utanen substation is Fingrid’s first substation to be connected to a solar power park. The expansion of Utanen will enable the connection of the solar power plant planned for Tunturisuo in Utajärvi to the main grid.
